Instructions
Read the text and decide if the statements are True (T) or False (F).
The Importance of Jointing Techniques
Civil engineers use different methods to connect materials. Mechanical fixings such as bolts, screws and rivets are popular because they allow components to be removed when repairs are required. Non-mechanical methods such as welding and adhesive bonding often provide strong permanent joints. However, environmental conditions may affect some connections. For example, vibration can loosen mechanical fixings, while excessive heat can weaken certain adhesives. Engineers must therefore consider future maintenance, operating conditions and safety requirements before selecting a jointing method.
Questions
- Bolts are examples of mechanical fixings.
- Welded joints are easy to separate.
- Repairs may require removable connections.
- Vibration can affect mechanical joints.
- Heat can strengthen adhesives.
- Engineers consider several factors when choosing joints.
